Bertelsen Nature Park

Bertelsen Nature Park consists of almost 35 acres of natural wetlands and habitat. Best known for Stewart Pond, the park also is home to Grimes Pond, Teal Slough, and Sandpiper Pond located west of Stewart Pond. During the winter, these ponds are filled with water, providing homes for many species of wildlife, both animals and plants.

Stewart Pond can be found off of Bertelsen Road on Stewart Road where it dead ends right near the gravel parking area for the Stewart Pond look out point. As far as park amenities, Stewart Pond doesn’t offer much more than a portable potty and a viewing platform with a bench. But sit there for a few minutes, and in the summer you may spot a birds nest through your binoculars, or a deer running through the tall grass or near by shrubs and trees. The pond area in the summer is full of mint, giving the air a distinct smell. During the wetter months of the year, the pond fills with water, providing a home for the Western pond turtle and other wildlife.

This nature park is loosely fenced, with acres of shrubs and grass, with mowed pathways throughout it. There are two trails that you can take a walk on, the Bertelsen Trail and the Malik Trail. A second viewing platform is found off of 1st Avenue on Wallis Street. The trails are not best suited if you’re looking to push a stroller or take an elderly person for a walk, but they are delightful if you’re a nature enthusiast in search of a hike close by. Be sure to bring your binoculars and bird or animal book because you’re sure to find something that piques your interest!
