Cal Young Sports Park

Cal Young Skate Park is the kind of place that wasn’t so common place 15 or 20 years ago.  The skate park is a constructive place for the youth of the community to find healthy ways to take care of all the energy that they have.  Let’s hope though that the kids using the park practice safety.

The park is located by Cal Young Middle School and the best way to get there is to travel north on Coburg Road.  Once you pass under Belt Line, you will see Crescent Avenue on the west side of Coburg Road.  Turn west (towards the coast) and follow Crescent Avenue to Gilham.  Once you get to Gilham Road turn left and then take another left immediately into the parking lot.  The photo below was taken from the following Website:

There were a couple of young men there doing their skateboarding thing.  This park is a place where the young and old can come to work on improving their skateboarding skills and show off a bit or embarrass themselves.

One person set off down a slope of concrete, gathered speed and then caught some air going over a hump in the middle of the park.  As his board turned 360 degrees and hit the ground, his feet landed squarely back on the board.  He was really quite good.  None of the people were wearing any protective gear even though it is recommended on the sign before you go into the park.

Bikes are not allowed at the skate park either so this park is strictly for skateboarders.  The two young men below seemed quite pleased that they had a skate park like this to hang out in.  In fact they were so happy they just had to give each other a high five and make faces to demonstrate their joy.

The Cal Young Skate Park is more then a place to be a skateboard aficionado.  There is a playground area for the younger kids, a basketball court, and restrooms located near by.  You will also find park benches and a few trees off to the west that will offer a little shade.

This is a great place to hone your skills if you are a skateboarder, and if not, then this is definitely a great place to come and check out how the younger generation spends their time living on the edge.  Best part it, it’s something you can do in Eugene for free!
